Minetta Tavern: McNally Strikes Again
McNally has the midas touch….and you can add Minetta Tavern to the list. Not that I’m counting but this makes it 10: Pastis, Balthazar, Morandi, Odeon, Schiller’s, Pulino’s, Cafe Luxembourg, Lucky Strike, and Pravda. WOW…he’s “The King of NY” when it comes to restos. I know I’m going on and on about McNally but what he has achieved is spectacular.
OK….back to Minetta Tavern.
The cozy and boisterous resto has an old school atmosphere with a buzzing bar. The menu is fairly simple. The food is good but there was one disappointment. The borscht (with a buckwheat crepe, creme fraiche, fresh horseradish, and herbs) was not my cup of tea. It was lacking in flavor, and I couldn’t identify what I was eating because everything was red- the meat, beets, etc.
Frisee Salad with Pomegranate: So light and tasty.
Black Label Burger: Topped with Sauteed Onions. This prime cut of dry aged rib-eye was tender and juicy. The fries were standard. All in all is was an unbelievable burger- I think I got my $26 worth!
I wanted the trout but they were out of it so I had the Sturgeon (fish special). It was well prepared- light and crispy.
Strip Steak: Cooked perfectly with a flavor-infused char to it. It was exquisite.
THE SWEET SPOT:
Warm Hazlenut Crepes: This was OK…Seemed to be missing something but I can’t put my finger on it.
Pots de Creme: Rich custard puddings- chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. These mini sweet pots were a perfect way to end the meal.
