A Gem In The East Village: Jewel Bako

I haven’t been to Jewel Bako in a couple of years but it seems as though this place hasn’t missed a beat since my last visit. The fabulous tunnel-like interior adds a warmth to the jewel-box size room. This chic Japanese resto offers a unique variety of sushi. Don’t come here if you’re craving chicken teriyaki…. but if you’re a sushi snob, you’ll feel right at home!

The food is delicate, fresh, complex and tasty- all within a wonderful presentation, topped off with terrific service. The best deal on the menu is the chef’s choice omakase- you can’t go wrong.


Assortment of Yellowtail Sashimi Hamachi, Kanpachi, Hiramasa and Shima Aji: Fresh and light!

Japanese Mushrooms Steamed in Sake and Yuzu: Seasoned well- very tasty!

Trio of Tartares with Sweet Potato Chips: Terrific balance of textures and flavors! The blue fin tuna was my favorite.

The rolls had intriguing combinations. Spicy Tuna Yellowtail, Japanese Snow Crab and Seared Japanese Red Snapper with Shiso, Kishu & Cucumber.


Green tea ice cream sandwiched between soft chocolate wafers, with chocolate sauce and toasted almonds. It was delicious. The perfect dessert to top off a night of sushi!

CHAT: I might have to put Jewel Bako back into rotation. Also, if you’re in the area and in the mood for tapas and wine, check out Jewel Bako’s sister resto- Degustation. It’s a French/Spanish inspired tapas bar where everyone has a seat at the Chef’s Table! The menu comes with either a 5 or 10 piece set meal or, you can just select various tapas.
