I usually don’t go too far uptown (don’t want to risk a noise bleed) but for Marcus Samuelsson, I thought it was worth the trip. I headed up to Harlem on Friday afternoon for a power lunch at Red Rooster with an extraordinary group of people.

As you walk into Red Rooster, you’re greeted by a bustling bar (with a communal table), vibrant colors and walnut-wood molding. A line of shelves stacked with jars, books, candles and antiques separates the bar area from the dining room. A great energy fills the beautifully designed resto.

Once seated, I continued to explore the intricacies of the design that included wonderful pieces of art (some from the Studio Museum), interesting wallpaper and an open kitchen. And guess who was busy at work in that open kitchen?! Yes, it was Marcus!

The affordable menu at Red Rooster is based on Marcus’ innovative take on American comfort food classics. The dishes are filled with robust flavors, global influences, unique pairings and a few surprises.

Corn Bread with Herbed Tomato Jam: The tomato jam worked well with the buttery, moist and sweet corn bread.

Pickled Beet Salad with Manchengo: Very tasty- there was a subtle sweetness to the dish.

Blackened Catfish with Black Eyed Peas and Collards- Delicious!

Grilled Salmon with Warm Potato Salad- A friend had the salmon and she was on the other side of the table so I wasn’t able to get a taste.

Steak & Oxtail- A winning combo! The oxtail was tender and full of flavor.

Burger with Spicy Mayo, Cheddar, Mushroom & Truffle Fries- The well dressed burger was scrumptious!

Shrimp & Dirty Rice- Perfectly seasoned with a smoky undertone.

Gravlax on Pumpernickel with Avocado and Dill Cream Cheese- Well cured and fresh.

Helga’s Meatballs with Mashed and Lingonberry- A Scandinavian Standard….The lingonberries made an excellent accompaniment to the wonderfully tender and juicy Swedish meatballs.

SWEET SPOT: I was eyeing the sweet potato doughnuts but we didn’t have time for dessert.

SIP: Great cocktail menu.

CHAT: We were all groovin’ to the upbeat playlist that included hits from Michael Jackson, Kanye West, Mary J, Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson and Musical Youth.
