I usually don’t go too far uptown (don’t want to risk a noise bleed) but for Marcus Samuelsson, I thought it was worth the trip. I headed up to Harlem on Friday afternoon for a power lunch at Red Rooster with an extraordinary group of people.
As you walk into Red Rooster, you’re greeted by a bustling bar (with a communal table), vibrant colors and walnut-wood molding. A line of shelves stacked with jars, books, candles and antiques separates the bar area from the dining room. A great energy fills the beautifully designed resto.
Once seated, I continued to explore the intricacies of the design that included wonderful pieces of art (some from the Studio Museum), interesting wallpaper and an open kitchen. And guess who was busy at work in that open kitchen?! Yes, it was Marcus!
The affordable menu at Red Rooster is based on Marcus’ innovative take on American comfort food classics. The dishes are filled with robust flavors, global influences, unique pairings and a few surprises.
The dimly lit resto has a divey, cavernous feel- very different from a traditional Japanese restaurant.
It’s one part dive, one part resto, and one part lounge with a DJ (on the weekends). I love spots with unique vibes that are unexpected. Oh, and did I forget to mention that this hipster hangout is open till 2am!
Ryoko has delicious and fresh sushi with a good variety of options. If you’re feeling daring, you can try the volcano roll- it has peanut butter in it. :/

CHAT: I’ll definitely go back the next time I’m in San Fran! I love the fact that it’s a late night spot….so instead of noshing on pizza or fries after a night out- you can stop in for a spicy tuna roll!

I sat down with my girl, Celebrity Stylist Crystal Streets to get the Foodie 411. It was hard to stay focused because we were catching up on so many things but I managed to still get a few questions in. Before we get to the food, let’s touch on fashion- Crystal just launched her new jewelry line- Lyra Love Star. I love it!
Here’s the Foodie 411…..Check out Crystal’s Sip, Chat, & Chow!
Tricia: What’s your favorite restaurant in NYC? And why?
This trifecta of a resto is the best! There’s a cafe (very chill), taqueria (open 24/7), and the subterranean brasserie (after checking in with the person with the clipboard, you have to go down the narrow stairs and through the kitchen to get to it).
